The advantages and benefits of travel
To travel is to discover oneself.
Traveling allows us to discover ourselves from a different perspective. I often talk about this on my travel blog, but sometimes we get stuck in a daily routine. And we consistently have the same kind of reactions to the events around us.

Embarking on an adventure to a new destination takes us out of our routine and into new situations! Often, these situations involve stressful events that push us out of our comfort zone and force us to confront our fears and limitations…
Travel is, therefore, a wonderful opportunity to learn a lot about oneself and one’s abilities. As one of the most beautiful travel quotes says, “There is no man more complete than he who has traveled much, who has changed the form of his thought and his life twenty times” (Lamartine).
Learning about oneself is certainly one of the most important benefits of travel! A strength that will accompany us daily to face all the trials that life may throw our way.
Learning to do without the unnecessary while travelling
To travel frequently and for extended periods, it’s essential to manage your budget carefully and limit yourself to the bare necessities. One of the many advantages of travel, therefore, lies in learning to do without the unnecessary.
No more snacking between meals (cakes and other sweets are expensive when traveling). No more unnecessary accessories (an overly heavy backpack is a burden when traveling), and no more impulsive spending that makes us spend euros unnecessarily throughout the year.
Traveling makes you realize all the things you could easily do without in your daily life. You learn to be more moderate and to better appreciate the value of things. It’s a more minimalist way of living, which ultimately benefits your mood.
If you knew how much stuff I sold or threw away while preparing for my round-the-world trip, you’d be surprised. We don’t always realize how much unnecessary stuff we accumulate in our daily lives. A long trip puts things into perspective and makes you want to let go of the excess and live more simply.
Boosting self-confidence through powerful experiences
By travelling, we will have new experiences which will allow us to strengthen our mental strength and to take on new, ever crazier challenges.
To give you an example, I had no idea I’d be able to go paragliding or zip-lining through the jungle before I even left on my trip! These experiences taught me that we can overcome all our fears, and I think that’s one of the best things about traveling. Finally gaining self-confidence.
Travel also helps accelerate the process if you’re struggling to move forward in your life. Why? Because in a year of travel, you’ll feel like you’ve lived 10 years of your life.
Everything moves so fast and intensely when you travel. You experience so many things and meet so many different people. It’s definitely more enriching than just sitting quietly on your couch…
You’ll find excellent travel books, with explorers recounting their experiences in narratives or novels. These are fantastic sources of inspiration for anyone who wants to travel but doesn’t really know where to start.
Opening yourself up to others is one of the benefits of travel.
Travel greatly facilitates encounters, especially when traveling alone. Whether it’s other travelers having a similar experience or locals, it offers vastly different opportunities to meet people from all corners of the world. These are individuals we would likely never have had the chance to meet otherwise, leading to powerful, unforgettable, and incredibly enriching encounters.
This is a wonderful opportunity to open our minds to otherness and differences. To realize that we can appreciate other ways of living and thinking. This leads us to respect our fellow human beings more and to be more open to others without fear. We exchange ideas, we compare perspectives, we reimagine the world!
We learn about the customs and traditions of other citizens of the world, we eat the same dishes as they, and we discover their living environment. By experiencing the daily lives of these people while traveling, we are transformed and realize that traveling has the advantage of opening us up to others.
Create happy memories while travelling
Traveling also offers the opportunity to create many memories. Often happy memories, because there’s nothing more rewarding than discovering new horizons. All this novelty, combined with a great sense of freedom, allows for the emergence of extremely pleasant feelings.
We visit incredible historical sites, wander through magnificent and breathtaking landscapes, and have amazing and unforgettable encounters. It’s obviously fleeting, but so impactful that it will stay with us forever. We naturally want to travel to create happy memories.s
The hardships will remain, but intertwined with the memory of overcoming them all. So, when faced with difficulties in our daily lives, we can recall these precious memories. They will help us put our worries into perspective and move forward.
All these memories will also be a source of motivation to create more. Because when you return from a trip, you only have one desire: to leave again. Traveling always allows you to have instructive and enriching experiences .
Learning new languages
There’s no better way to learn a foreign language than by being fully immersed in the country. By spending several weeks in a foreign country, you’ll bring together all the key elements that facilitate learning a particular language.
It is indeed much easier to learn a foreign language through acquisition rather than through pure learning. This is particularly true with our native language. Being on a trip, completely immersed in another language, allows us to encounter it in the same way we encountered our native language. It’s more natural and much more accessible to the human brain.
With a basic understanding of the language, you’ll be able to better understand the country and the people around you. You’ll even be able to handle everyday tasks more easily, such as shopping or making simple reservations. However, you’ll need to use professional translators with certified translations if you need to provide official documents.
Beyond the purely linguistic aspect (being forced to express yourself in the language in question), you will also have the opportunity to understand the cultural and social aspects of the country. And you might even adopt new habits that you may find enjoyable.
In summary, since language learning is more fluid and more fun, there is no doubt that vel helps to expand one’s linguistic knowledge .
improve your health through active travel
Traveling also has numerous advantages and beneficial effects on health! Some studies have even reached this conclusion, based on the principle that travel can improve not only physical health but also mental health. Travel is thus presented as a powerful tool for improving emotional well-being.
It’s common to want to take a break, and traveling allows you to disconnect from daily life, clear your mind, or simply rest. Holidays significantly reduce stress and quickly restore a boost of positive energy.
For this reason, the environment you find yourself in while traveling is crucial and will more or less contribute to this improvement in your health. At a seaside resort, by the sea, you’ll soak up plenty of Vitamin C. In the mountains, you’ll be able to enjoy long hikes in wild, natural settings, which will boost your vitality.
Increased physical activity and exposure to nature do wonders for our bodies and minds. And there’s nothing better than a trip to get more active and enjoy all these benefits .
Eriching one’s general knowledge through travel
Traveling the world allows you to develop your general knowledge exponentially. By crossing numerous countries, you will learn far more than by reading any history or geography book.
Knowledge in the broadest sense of the word is one of the greatest advantages of travel . It’s about learning about the world we live in, the customs and traditions of different populations, and past and present political systems. But it also includes discovering culinary specialties from around the world, as well as local flora and fauna. Learning is undeniable in many areas.
Travel is truly the best teacher in the world, because it allows you to learn while having fun. You know and remember things well when you’ve experienced them or seen them for yourself. For example, I have a great deal of knowledge about Egyptian historical sites since I organized my trip to Egypt myself .
You can share all these experiences and knowledge with others after your trip. The goal isn’t necessarily to impress people, but listening to an adventurer can be truly fascinating.
Sleeping in unusual places
We often have the opportunity to sleep in truly amazing places when we travel. Unusual accommodations, particularly because of their environmental setting. I’m thinking, for example, of accommodations located in the heart of nature, perched high in a tree or in the middle of a lake (and accessible only by boat).
But these accommodations can also be found in the heart of a bustling megalopolis, and it’s just as surprising an experience if you’re not used to it! Whatever the environment, traveling allows you to test another way of life for a few days or a few weeks, and the place of stay is an integral part of that.
Some accommodations offer a glimpse into how other cultures have lived. I’m thinking particularly of unusual lodgings, such as yurts, caravans, Berber tents, or tipis. Some are basic, while others offer genuine luxury. And more recently, new concepts have emerged that are proving extremely popular. Imagine sleeping in a transparent bubble, for example, gazing at the stars.
Try new flavors
Traveling allows you to discover new flavors by tasting the local specialties of the different countries you visit. These culinary specialties can be quite surprising, depending on the traditions. It’s actually difficult to imagine this diversity without having traveled the world.
Not only are the products very different (fruits and vegetables in particular), but the recipes and tastes vary just as much. So, depending on the local culture and eating habits, the discoveries can be extremely varied. This makes you realize that even the simplest and most universal things (eating, drinking) can hold some truly surprising surprises.
Ultimately, it’s an opportunity to appreciate cultural diversity more fully. And it’s also a chance to learn new recipes to take home.
Improve your creativity
Besides the many benefits of travel on our general knowledge, it also helps to boost our creativity! By being confronted with new environments and exciting new experiences, our brain is in a state of flux and steps out of its comfort zone.
Indeed, if you’re wondering why travel boosts creativity, you should know that the brain is naturally lazy and difficult to coax out of its usual patterns. By traveling extensively and experiencing new and unique situations, the brain is kept in a more constant state of activity, thus preserving its adaptive capacity.
Travel, and the intense stimulation it brings, opens up new perspectives. New sounds, images, and even smells generate new synaptic connections essential for creativity. And this creativity is just as essential at work as it is for imagining one’s life differently.
Learn to better manage your budget
Traveling also teaches you how to manage your money daily because when you want to travel more often and for longer periods, you have to pay closer attention to your finances. Although the budget for a round-the-world trip isn’t as high as you might think, you still need to save a little beforehand to make the most of such a trip.
Once you’re there, in the thick of your trip, you’ll need to manage your budget effectively once again. Find cheap flights and affordable accommodations. Eat local food and avoid unnecessary spending on souvenirs that will only weigh you down for the rest of your adventure.
We also learn to negotiate prices and to think before making impulsive purchases. Our ability to restrain ourselves from unnecessary expenses also increases. Ultimately, traveling allows us to better understand the true value of things.
Reconnecting and strengthening family ties
Traveling as a couple or family strengthens bonds because you need to support each other on a trip, whatever the circumstances. Preparations, long journeys, research on location, or even long days of sightseeing are all situations where mutual support is essential to making progress. These are exceptional circumstances that reinforce trust and strengthen relationships.
The same is true for the good times, which will create happy family memories. Moments shared together that can be reminisced about once back home. Whether it’s to strengthen a couple’s bond or to create deeper connections with parents or children, travel is very beneficial.
And if you travel solo, you’ll realize that nothing beats a warm home and the love of your family. Longer trips, although they keep us away from our families for a while, allow us to strengthen those bonds even further. After the separation, the reunions are often all the more beautiful. Because distance always sparks interest and intense, moving reunions.
Enjoy a true digital detox
Traveling often provides a (more or less forced) break from the internet and social media. B Whether we can connect or not, we often spend much less time online when we travel. Simply because we have neither the time nor the desire.
And so, temporarily breaking free from this smartphone addiction is a lifesaver! We can finally enjoy the moment without being tempted to endlessly scroll for entertainment. There are so many better things to do when you’re in a foreign country. So many new things to discover that this urge naturally fades away.
It’s then possible to experience a true digital detox by eliminating all the unnecessary tasks we perform online. Only the essentials we might need while traveling will remain (hotel bookings, researching activities, transportation, etc.). And that’s without even considering those isolated locations where network connectivity will be virtually impossible. No worries, just make the most of it!
